Winemakers Notes

Winemaker: Matt Check, Head Winemaker

Winemaker Note's: One of my favorite things about working with Washington state fruit is the diverse expressions we can offer through each variety, vineyard and AVA. I believe that Malbecs have been one of the varieties to show that distinctiveness the most drastically. This Malbec hails from the valley floor of Yakima Valley, which exerts more acidity empahzisng loads of dark fruit while not being bashful with its tannic intensity. Lined by a bit of a smoked meat element. Our Malbecs regardless of growning region/vineyard always offer drinkability now but a bountiful ability to age and become something even more special and unique.

Yakima Valley: A Unique AVA for Malbec

The Yakima Valley AVA of Washington State is known for its diurnal temperature shifts, with warm days giving way to cold nights, which is ideal for this thick-skinned grape.

Terroir-Driven Character

The distinctive terroir of Yakima Valley gives this 2022 Malbec its distinctive flavor. The well-drained, sandy, and loamy soils allow the vines to develop in optimum growing conditions, bringing concentrated flavors and natural richness to the grapes. These soils are mineral-rich but dry enough to support root growth, giving the wine a touch of minerality and earthiness.

"Creating the 2022 Yakima Valley Malbec was about balancing bold fruit flavors with subtle earthiness, inspired by the unique soils of the AVA." – Matt Check

Malbec: A Tale of Two Regions

While Argentina's Mendoza region has become synonymous with Malbec, the varietal’s history traces back to France and arrived in the U.S. in the late 19th century. Comparing Yakima Valley and Mendoza Malbecs:

  • Acidity: Yakima’s cooler nights retain more acidity, leading to a more structured and balanced wine.
  • Tannins: Mendoza’s higher altitudes produce riper tannins and denser fruit concentration.

Crafted with Passion: Winemaker Matt Check

This wine is the vision of Matt Check, a seasoned winemaker dedicated to expressing terroir through innovative blends. His deep knowledge of Yakima Valley’s AVA, paired with years of viticulture experience, ensures every bottle of Malbec is crafted with precision and artistry.
