Matt Check, Head Winemaker
One of my favorite things about working with Washington state fruit is the diverse expressions we can offer through each variety, vineyard, and AVA. I believe that Malbecs have been one of the varieties to show that distinctiveness the most drastically. This Malbec hails from the valley floor of Yakima Valley, which exerts more acidity empahzisng loads of dark fruit while not being bashful with its tannic intensity. Lined by a bit of a smoked meat element. Our Malbecs regardless of growning region/vineyard always offer drinkability now but a bountiful ability to age and become something even more special and unique.

The Yakima Valley AVA of Washington State is known for its diurnal temperature shifts, with warm days giving way to cold nights, which is ideal for this thick-skinned grape.
The distinctive terroir of Yakima Valley gives this 2022 Malbec its distinctive flavor. The well-drained, sandy, and loamy soils allow the vines to develop in optimum growing conditions, bringing concentrated flavors and natural richness to the grapes. These soils are mineral-rich but dry enough to support root growth, giving the wine a touch of minerality and earthiness.
"Creating the 2022 Yakima Valley Malbec was about balancing bold fruit flavors with subtle earthiness, inspired by the unique soils of the AVA." – Matt Check
The Argentine wine industry, specifically the Mendoza region, has become well known for this noble grape, with first plantings tracing back to the mid-19th century, whereas Malbecs were first introduced to the United States in the late 19th century. If faced with a blind tasting between Malbecs from Argentina and those from Yakima Valley, there are two major characteristics to look for in these grape varieties: acidity levels (Yakima's cooler nights hold a higher acid level creating a more structured and balanced wine) and tannin levels (Mendoza's higher elevation creates a higher fruit concentration and riper tannins).
This wine is crafted by Matt Check, a seasoned winemaker with a passion for creating innovative blends that reflect the terroir's essence. With years of experience in viticulture and a deep connection to Yakima Valley's unique AVA, Matt brings precision and artistry to every bottle.
